-------------- Send Express™ Installation Q & A --------------
Q: How do I install Send Express if I'm using Suitcase or Master Juggler?
A: The normal Send Express installation process (via the Installer) does the following:
a. Places the file "◊Send Express Startup" into your System Folder,
b. Places the file "Send Express Help" into your System Folder,
c. If you have a Mac Plus running System 6, places "AppleTalk" into your System Folder,
d. For System 6, Installs "Send Express DA" into your System File, the same as if you were to use Font/DA Mover to do it.
For System 7, place the "Send Express DA" into your Apple Menu Items Folder.
So, if you're using Suitcase or Master Juggler, drag the files a. and b. into your System Folder (and c. too, if you have a Mac Plus). Then treat the "Send Express DA" the same as you would any other DA.
Q: I tried installing Send Express with the Installer, but the installation failed. It told me that everything was "OK," but now I can't start up off my hard disk! What do I do now?
A: The Installer is a new version of Apple's standard Installer. One of its quirks is that, in a few instances, the Installer fails and leaves your hard disk so that you can't start up! But not to worry, there's an easy fix…
1. Start up your Mac using a floppy disk that has a System Folder on it.
2. Open the System Folder on your hard disk.
3. Open the folder "Installer Temp" which is inside the System Folder.
4. You should see a System File inside Installer Temp — this is your
original System File! Drag that System File out of Installer Temp
and into the System Folder on your hard disk, replacing any System
File already there.
You should now be able to restart from your hard disk again. Try to install Send Express again. If you continue to have difficulties, try turning off your virus checkers before installing; they sometimes interfere with the Installer.
Q: I just installed Send Express but when I restart my Mac, Send Express displays a message which says that I need System 6.0 or later and AppleTalk 48 or later. I have both of those… What's the problem?
A: First, make sure that you aren't running System 6.0.6. This is a bad version of the System that Apple recalled. Use System 6.0.7 instead.
The next thing to try is to open the Chooser (from under the Apple menu) and then close it; then restart. There is a quirk where sometimes AppleTalk doesn't "wake up" until you open and close the Chooser.
Finally, if you are using a Mac Plus, make sure that the AppleTalk file is in your System Folder (this updates your version of AppleTalk). Also for Mac Pluses, the AppleTalk file won't be effective unless you have installed System Software specifically for a "Mac Plus," or for "Any Macintosh."
Q: I've noticed that there is an INIT called "Installer Cleanup" in my System Folder. How did it get there?
A: When you use the Installer, it puts the Installer Cleanup INIT in your System Folder. The Installer Cleanup's job is to clean up the Installer Temp folder when you restart. After cleaning up, Installer Cleanup erases itself! Normally, you should not have to worry about all of this. However, if you are using an INIT manager (e.g., INITPicker), it may be blocking Installer Cleanup from running. So, what you should do is configure your INIT manager to let Installer Cleanup run, and then restart. Installer Cleanup will run, clean up the Installer Temp folder, and then erase itself from your System Folder.
Q: I bought a Send Express 5-user pack (or 2-pack or 3-pack) and now I want to expand beyond five (or two or three). How do I add more Send Express users to my network?
A: You simply purchase additional 2-user, 3-user and 5-user packs to add up to the number of users that you want. If the number of users you wish to add is more than two, three or five, you should consider purchasing a Send Express zone-pack. A single Send Express zone-pack can be installed on an unlimited number of Macs in a single AppleTalk zone. If you already have a zone-pack, but would now like to add users who are in a different AppleTalk zone, you simply need to purchase additional zone-packs for each zone you wish to add. All users, both old and new, will be able to communicate with all other Send Express users on the network.
Q: After installing Send Express on a Mac that’s running System 7, when I open the Apple menu I see two Send Express desk accessories, one titled Send Express and one titled Send Express™. Which is the correct DA?
A: The best way to determine which DA is correct is to use the Finder’s Get Info menu command to determine the versions and/or modification dates of the two DA files. Once you determine the versions and/or modification dates of the files, you can remove the file which is not the current version you’re running. This problem can arise if you had previously installed Send Express on a Mac running System 6.x and you later upgraded to System 7. To remedy the problem, open the System Folder on your System 7 Mac and then open the Apple Menu Items folder which is contained in the System Folder. You should see two desk accessory files for Send Express. Use the information returned by the Finder’s Get Info menu command to determine which file to remove.
